Rate My Area

Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 6, 2026

1. Scope and who we are

This Privacy Policy explains how Rate My Area handles information when you use ratemyarea.com, create an account, search for an area, save an area, submit a review, or contact us. Rate My Area is the service provider responsible for this website. Questions or privacy requests can be sent to support@ratemyarea.com.

2. Information we handle

The information we handle depends on how you use the service. When you use social sign-in, we do not receive your password from the social identity provider. Passwords for email accounts are processed by the authentication platform rather than shown to Rate My Area.

  • Account information, such as your name, email address, account or provider identifier, and profile image if a sign-in provider supplies it.
  • Content you submit, including reviews, ratings, reviewer type, time in an area, report details, support messages, and any information included in those submissions.
  • Saved-area records and service preferences associated with your account.
  • Search inputs such as ZIP codes, cities, neighborhoods, and addresses you submit to find an area. Address suggestions may be sent to location-search providers to return matching locations.
  • Technical and usage information that may be collected through the service or its infrastructure, such as device, browser, IP address, session or cookie identifiers, request information, and diagnostic or security logs.

3. Location and area data

Rate My Area uses the ZIP code, city, neighborhood, or address that you enter to provide results. The current service does not request device GPS permission. An address you choose to submit is different from precise device location and may be used to resolve the relevant area. Area profiles also contain public and licensed data, such as demographic, housing, school, crime, transportation, and place information, plus licensed or publicly available discussion sources. These data describe areas and are not necessarily information about you.

4. How we use information

  • Provide account authentication, searches, area profiles, saved areas, and review features.
  • Request relevant map, location, research, and AI-supported services needed to generate or improve area information.
  • Moderate reviews, prevent abuse, protect the service, investigate incidents, and comply with legal obligations.
  • Respond to support requests and improve the service, data coverage, reliability, and presentation.
  • Send service-related messages. We use promotional communications only where offered and as permitted, with available choices to stop them.

5. Public reviews and content

Approved reviews and ratings are intended to be publicly visible with the area they concern. Do not include sensitive personal information or personal information about others in a review. Public content can be indexed, copied, quoted, or redistributed by other people or services, and we cannot control those independent uses after publication.

6. Service providers and data sources

We use third-party hosting, database, authentication, and related application infrastructure. Social identity providers may process sign-in information when you choose social sign-in; the current sign-in flow may receive narrow account-profile information and does not request access to your mailbox or calendar. Depending on a search or area profile, recipients may include mapping, geocoding, and address-lookup services; public or licensed area-data services, such as demographic, school, crime, and place-data providers; and AI-assisted research services used to organize or summarize permitted inputs. We send only information reasonably needed for the relevant request. Provider evidence archives are retained for data-quality and audit purposes and are separate from private account records.

  • Providers process information under their own terms and privacy practices.
  • We may disclose information to processors acting for us, when you direct a sharing action, to meet lawful requests, to protect against fraud or security threats, or in connection with a business transfer subject to appropriate notice or safeguards where required.
  • We may use or disclose deidentified or aggregated information where permitted.

7. Cookies, sessions, and choices

The service and its providers may use cookies, local storage, or similar session technologies to keep you signed in, remember necessary settings, and operate securely. Browser controls can limit or clear cookies and local storage, but doing so may affect sign-in or saved settings. You can revoke a social sign-in connection through the relevant provider and manage account access through available provider-account controls. If optional marketing communications are offered, their opt-out instructions apply separately. Reading this policy is not consent to optional marketing or tracking.

8. Retention and security

We retain information for as long as reasonably needed for the purposes described here, including service operation, legal, accounting, dispute, fraud-prevention, and security needs. Retention can include limited backup copies. We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards appropriate to the service, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

9. International processing

Information may be processed where Rate My Area or our service providers operate. Where required by applicable law, we use appropriate safeguards for cross-border processing. The availability and form of safeguards can depend on the processing and location involved.

10. Your privacy choices and rights

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, export, restriction, objection, withdrawal of consent, or an appeal of a privacy decision. To make a request, email support@ratemyarea.com with enough detail to identify the account or submission involved. We may use proportionate verification and will not ask you to email a password or government ID. You can remove saved areas through the service and can contact us about your account or content. Some information may be retained where legally required or reasonably necessary for security, disputes, records, or backups. Mandatory rights available under the law of your residence are not waived by this policy.

11. Children

Rate My Area is intended for adults aged 18 and older and is not directed to children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact support@ratemyarea.com so we can take appropriate steps.

12. Changes and contact

We may update this policy as the service changes or legal requirements develop. Changes apply prospectively, and we will provide notice of material changes where required. For questions, requests, or concerns, contact support@ratemyarea.com.
